Prime Minister Speech

Good evening/ Bonsoir

The Vanuatu Government through my office is delighted and honored to extend a very warm welcome to all of you who are present here today at the opening ceremony. Bienvenue a toutes et a tous.

While taking this opportunity, I would like to acknowledge the hard work of the management and the staff of Ramada Port Vila for hosting this ceremony to mark the official opening of Ramada resort Vanuatu. I use the occasion, to congratulate the owner for this great achievement and also to thanks you to choose Vanuatu as a location of this hotel.

If I may, I would also like to take the opportunity to talk about the opportunities created by the hotel industry in Vanuatu, in terms of employment as well as accommodation and food services. All of this shows how people of Vanuatu can benefit from tourism related services in general.

To put into perspective, here are some of the figure behind the effect of the tourism sector on the Vanuatu economy.

Over the last 5 year, tourism related activities (accommodation and food service) contributed about 5 per cent to the Vanuatu GDP and contributed around 7 % to total GDP. However the overall spillover effects is quiet significant to the socio-economic development in Vanuatu.

Visitors arrival in Vanuatu by air grew at an average rate of 1.2 % over the last 5 years, the lower than expected growth was attributed to the fall of 19% in 2015. There was a slight increase in 2016 but  remain weak following the aftermath of TC Pam combine with the runway issue at the Bauerfeild International airport. There is a positive outlook for 2017 as visitors arrival gradually increase and recorded a per cent point growth in quarter 1 compare to same period in the previous year.

Turning to the wider private sector in Vanuatu, many representative of which I see here today- from the hotels and restaurants representing our hospitality industry, from the manufacturing sector and from our professional services companies.

The private sector contributes to the economy of Vanuatu by generating a large part of our GDP, estimated around VT70 to VT80 billion creating jobs for local employment, paying taxes, and providing public fees to the Government.

The economic growth of Vanuatu estimated a decline of 1.8% in 2015 compare to 2.3 % in 2014. This was attributed by the challenges faced by the country because TC Pam where total economic value of the effects (damages and loss) was estimated to be approximately VT48.5 billion (U$$449.4 million) according to the post Disaster Needs Assessment Report. This is equivalent to 64.1% of the gross domestic product (GDP) in Vanuatu.

The National Sustainable development Plan 2030 that I have recently launched, emphasis the need to strengthen linkages between tourism, infrastructure, agriculture and industry in order to increase production of quality local produce for domestic consumption and export. As unique and fascinating destination as well as the legendary hospitality of the people of Vanuatu, tourism remains a priority where my government will continue to support.

The current government that I am leading will also continue to build and strengthen dialogue with private sector which reflect the interest of the people of Vanuatu to be self employed, entrepreneur and employers working collaboratively to achieve a strong economy.
