Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea:U.S. Undersecretary of the Navy, Thomas B. Modly, arrived in Pt. Vila, Vanuatu, September 25, 2018,on a two-day visit to underscore the importance of the United States’ long term relationship with Vanuatu.

 During his visit, Modly will meet with high-level Vanuatu government officials and military personnel from the Vanuatu Police Force to reaffirm U.S. commitment to the defense and security of Vanuatu within the Indo-Pacific region.

This visit is part of a longer trip throughout the region where Modly also visited Fiji, Kiribati, and Papua New Guinea before concluding his tour in Pt. Vila. During his visit to each of the Pacific Island nations he emphasized United States’ intention to develop longer-term plans to partner with and support partner capacity as part of the recently announced Indo-Pacific Strategy

Modly is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy where he received a Bachelor of Science, with distinction, in Political Science in 1983. Upon graduation he joined the United States Navy and proudly served as an UH-1N pilot until 1990, when he departed active duty for business school and the private sector.

Prior to being sworn in as the 33rd Undersecretary of the Navy on December 4, 2017, Modly was the Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Financial Management from 2004 to 2007.He also served as Co-Founder and Vice President, Corporate Development of Iconixx from 1998 to 2002; Vice President of Oxford Associates from 1996 to 1998; and Director, Corporate Development of UNC Incorporated from 1992-1996.

While serving in the Navy, Modly attended Georgetown University where he earned a Master of Arts in Government/International Relations in 1983. He also attended Harvard Business School from 1990 to 1992 where he earned a Master’s in Business Administration with Honors in Business, Government and Strategy.
